Organic microbiological fertilizer – safe, cheap and effective


The organic microbiological model is actually not a new thing in Vietnam. From 1992, through the IPM program, many farmers in Vo Mieu commune, Thanh Son district have been introduced to organic microbiological fertilizing techniques to be applied to their tea plantations. However, in Tam Thanh commune, Tan Son district, which is less than 15 km away from Vo Mieu commune, people are still unaware of the benefits generated by this cheap and effective kind of fertilizer.


From the exchanging activities in the project between members of Tam Thanh and Vo Mieu communes, management boards and representatives of Tam Thanh club members have had a chance to visit farmers’ families living in Vo Mieu commune who are currently applying the microbiological fertilizing model. The members are very interested in this simple but beneficial fertilizing method.
In November 2012, with the support of SRD, Tam Thanh club organized a training course to introduce the roles, benefits and to give instructions on how to implement the use of the organic microbiological fertilizing method using EMIC biological products for 20 families. Right after the course, 20 families registered for the trial fertilizing at their homes. After 1 month of composting, the microbiological manure could be used as a fertilizer for the vegetables in the farmers’ gardens. During the experimental process, the Tam Thanh club management board and SRD officers have closely supported farmers and helped them to evaluate the quality of the fertilizer. Ms. Ly’s family, 1 of the 20 families applying the model said that: “Without any chemical fertilizer, I only use the microbiological fertilizer and water from the stream on my vegetable garden; my vegetables are however, really thriving! In the past the vegetables could only grow for a short period of time in my garden because of the red soil. Nowadays however, my family has fresh vegetables to eat every day. I only need to buy the seeds and one bag of enzymes for the compost but they do not cost me much”.

Evaluating the initial result, all the families applying the fertilizing model have the same comments that this type of fertilizer does not only smell better than the cattle manure but that is also is very soft and could be used after only thang1 month of composting. Not only Ms. Ly but all of the 20 families participating in this project admitted that this composting technique and method were very simple and cheap because of the absolute utilization of all the tree leaves and other organic waste. More particularly, the farmer families are now able to provide enough fresh and nutritious vegetables for themselves.

With the success from 20 pioneering families, after just 2 months, 47 club members have learnt and applied the new fertilizing technique. A some 40 tons of fertilizer is estimated to have been used as manure for vegetables and tea plantations.

Group activity like helping each others to manufacture and use organic biological fertilizer in agricultural production is one of the joint activities between 3 provinces namely: Hoa Binh – Thai Nguyen – Phu Tho. After 2 years of being active in the three provinces, the project has helped approximately 600 families, especially ethnic minority families, understand how to stabilize their livelihood by improving the fertility of the soil and diminishing the environmental pollution through the microbiological fertilizer composting and manufacturing method.
