Project locations

Phu Tho, Thai Nguyen and Hoa Binh are three mountainous provinces in the North of Vietnam, where the rate of ethnic minority people accounts for more than 40% and the poverty rate is still high. Project communes in the three provinces are all located in remote areas with many difficulties, especially in accessing science and technological advancements. Traditional knowledge doesn't provide sufficient knowledge for ethnic minority communities to be able to economically sustain their livelihoods, land and population and especially profound effect of climate change.

Thai Nguyen
Thai Nguyen is the political and economic center of Viet Bac area and of the North East midland and mountainous area in general. It is surrounded by Bac Kan located in the North; Vinh Phuc,and Tuyen Quang to the West. To the East are Lang Son and Bac Giang. To the South is Hanoi Capital. Thai Nguyen has an area of 3.562,82 km².
The major ethnic groups are Kinh, Tay, Nung, San Diu, H'mong, San Chay and Hoa. Tay group and San Diu group account for 10.7% and 2.4% of population, respectively.

In 2010, the rate of poor households was 20.57%.

Project locations: Duc Luong and Phu Cuong Communes (Dai Tu District, Thai Nguyen Province)

 Hoa Binh

Hoa Binh is a mountainous province located 73 km from the capital Hanoi. It is bordered by Phu Tho on the North, Ha Nam and Ninh Binh on the South. To the West are Son La and Thanh Hoa. Hoa Binh's area is 4.662,5 km2. The topography is separated into two main areas: mountainous area (West – North) and midland (East – South).
Kinh, Muong, Tay, Thai, Mong and Dao are major ethnic groups living in Hoa Binh, of which Muong people accounts for 63.3% and Thai people accounts for 3.9%.

In 2010, the rate of poor households was 31.51%.

Phu Tho
Phu Tho is located in the Northern midland and mountainous area of Vietnam. It lies in the area where the Northeast and Northwest of the Red River Delta meet. Phu Tho is bordered by Hanoi on the East, Vinh Phuc to the Northeast, and Son La in the West. To the Northeast is Yen Bai. It is also surrounded by Hoa Binh in the South and Tuyen Quang in the North. The topography of Phu Tho is quite complicated. It is separated into three main parts: mountainous area has an area of 3.327,54 km2 (accounts for 79% of total area), midland and delta account for 14,35% and 6,65% of total area, respectively.
Main ethnic groups living in Phu Tho include Kinh, Muong, Dao, San Chay, Tay, Mong and Thai. Muong and Dao make up 13.62% and 0.92% of ethnic groups here, respectively.

In 2010, the rate of poor households was 20.34%.

Project locations: Tam Thanh Commune (Tan Son District) and Vo Mieu Commune (Thanh Son District). The two main ethnic minority groups living in the two project locations are Muong and Dao.
Tan Son and Thanh Son are two poor districts of Phu Tho Province. Especially, Tam Thanh Commune of Tan Son District falls under the list of poor communes supported by Program 135 of Vietnamese Government.
